Supper club
SUPPER CLUB NEWSA great time was had at the last Supper Club. We are pleased to confirm that the next meeting will be held on Thursday 7th February and the Guest of Honour will be Mathew Maynard of Glamorgan County Cricket Club. Further details will be posted when available. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SUPPER CLUBDuring its Centenary Year the Club introduced "Supper Nights" which proved to be very successful and involved guests joining us for an informal evening. Generally in the area of professionalism in sport and in particular rugby the majority of supporters have been disenfranchised in the social aspects of respective sports and any involvement with "the great and the good is dictated by their ability to pay for it. After the lapse of several years in 2004 several members felt that it was time that the concept of Supper Nights was reintroduced and David East and Dewi Evans got together to develop the concept and establish the function. The evening with guests is entirely informal - supper consisting of such fare as sausage and mash, chicken in the basket, faggots and peas, lamb shanks etc and with wine, at a cost of no more than £10 thereby making it eminently affordable to members and their personal guests. These nights are held periodically during the year and embrace all sports.David East chairs the function and the support from guests, sponsors and members has been incredible. A strong team consisting of David East, Dewi Evans, Graham Lane, Graham Morgan, Malcolm Cole and Keith Payne has been established to administer. The first Supper Night was held on the 8th April 2004 Since that date Guests who have graced the function have been:- Steve HansenRobert CroftLeighton JamesDerek BevanClive(the book)ThomasBleddyn WilliamsDr Jack Matthews"Gren" JonesColin JonesRobert RyderGareth JenkinsDavid MoffettKevin EvansNigel WhitehouseJohn ToshackGareth EdwardsWRU Group Chief Executive Roger LewisPhil DaviesPaul RingerBrynmor WilliamsPeter WalkerDan SheperdOssie WheatleyHugh DaviesRoger DaviesOver the next months Guests will include Lord Neil Kinnock and other speakers yet to be named. Supper Nights have also been sponsored and we gratefully thank Godwin Construction, CDMC, Ledley Engineering, N Power, Lewis Ballard, J S Scaffolding and Mike Thomas Builders for their valued support. It is not the intention of the Supper Club to raise funds and we have been unable to avoid this but we have attempted to immediately distribute. Beneficiaries to date include WRU Charitable Trust, various charities, and with provision of training apparatus, equipment and a complete PA System for the Club House. It is hoped that the concept will encourage other Clubs to adopt it thereby involving the ordinary supporters which can only benefit sport and Rugby in particular. To the Club Members and the supporters - a big thank you from the "Committee" - the success of the Supper Club could not be achieved without you.
